Why "Research Use Only" (RUO)?

What does "Research Use Only" mean? It means a product is sold strictly for laboratory research — like in vitro or animal studies — and has not gone through the regulatory approval process (such as FDA review) required for human use, treatment, or diagnosis.

Why does this distinction matter? It lets scientists access novel compounds for early-stage research, before a substance could ever be considered for further development. RUO products come with no safety or outcome guarantees outside a controlled research setting.

What is a Certificate of Analysis (COA)? An independent lab's confirmation of what's actually in a vial — typically purity percentage and identity — verifying the product matches its label.


Measurement & Concentration Terms

Milligram (mg) vs. Milliliter (mL) — what's the difference? Mg is a unit of weight (how much compound is present); mL is a unit of volume (how much liquid is present). What matters is the ratio between them — the concentration.

Concentration The amount of substance (mg) dissolved in a given volume of liquid (mL), usually written as mg/mL. "5 mg/mL" means 1 mL contains 5 mg of the compound.

Reconstitution Adding liquid to a lyophilized research compound to return it to liquid form. The ratio used determines the final concentration.

IU (International Units) A potency-based unit used when biological activity, not just weight, is the more meaningful measure — allowing different batches to be compared consistently.

Molarity A chemistry-based measure of concentration: moles of a substance per liter of solution. Common in the "Methods" section of published studies.


Core Pharmacology & Biology Terms

Half-life The time it takes for a substance's concentration to drop by half within a study system. Used to understand how long a compound stays active or detectable in an experiment.

Bioavailability How much of a substance actually reaches systemic circulation versus how much is lost before it can act. Route of administration studied often affects this significantly.

Receptor A protein, often on a cell's surface, that a research molecule binds to in order to trigger a response — like a lock that a specific key fits.

Agonist A compound that binds to a receptor and activates it — a key that turns the lock.

Antagonist A compound that binds a receptor but blocks it rather than activating it — a key that fits but doesn't turn, and blocks other keys too.

Amino acid sequence The specific order of amino acids that make up a peptide, determining its structure and behavior.

Analog A modified version of an existing peptide, changed slightly to study how that change affects stability or activity.

Lyophilization (freeze-drying) Removing moisture from a research compound solution to leave a stable powder for later reconstitution.

Peptide vs. protein Both are amino acid chains, but peptides are shorter (generally under 50 amino acids) while proteins are longer and often fold into complex structures.


Study Design Terms

In vitro Studies conducted outside a living organism — e.g., in a test tube or cell culture. Useful for basic mechanisms, but doesn't capture full biological complexity.

In vivo Studies conducted within a living organism (often rodents in early research). Shows whole-system behavior, but results don't automatically apply across species.

Murine model A study using mice or rats — a common, cost-effective early step in research.

Placebo-controlled A study design comparing a group receiving the studied substance to a group receiving an inactive substance, isolating the compound's actual effect.

Peer-reviewed A study vetted by independent experts before publication — one marker of research credibility.

Sample size (n=) The number of subjects in a study. Smaller sample sizes call for more cautious interpretation of results.


Storage & Handling Terms

Reconstitution Solution (Sterile Water) Preservative-free sterile water used to reconstitute lyophilized research compounds for short-term preparation.

Bacteriostatic Water Sterile water with benzyl alcohol used to reconstitute lyophilized research compounds for longer storage or multiple withdrawals.

Stability How well a compound retains its structure and activity over time and under different conditions (heat, light, etc.), which informs proper storage.

Cold chain Keeping temperature-sensitive materials within a specific range throughout shipping and storage to prevent degradation.
